چکیده

This paper explores the extent to which temporary Mexican migrants upgrade their skills while working in the United States. In contrast to Lacuesta (2006), we find that labor market performance in Mexico is positively related to one’s accumulated migration experience in the United States. Self-selection of high-skilled individuals into migration does not drive this result. Surprisingly, while we estimate a large rate of return to undocumented migration experience, we do not find the same for documented experience.

Repeated Circular Migration: Theory and Evidence from Undocumented Migrants

The intensity of U.S. border enforcement is found to have a significant pos...

Border Enforcement and Return Migration by Documented and Undocumented Mexicans.

Using data from the Mexican Migration Project we compute probabilities of departure and return for first and later trips to the United States in both documented and undocumented status. We then estimate statistical models to analyze the determinants of departure and return according to legal status. Prior to 1986, Mexico-U.S. migration was characterized by great circularity, but since then circ...

The consequences of migration to the United States for short-term changes in the health of Mexican immigrants.

Although many studies have attempted to examine the consequences of Mexico-U.S. migration for Mexican immigrants' health, few have had adequate data to generate the appropriate comparisons. In this article, we use data from two waves of the Mexican Family Life Survey (MxFLS) to compare the health of current migrants from Mexico with those of earlier migrants and nonmigrants. Because the longitu...
